99er Letters to Bernie: UPDATE: Letters to Rep Peter Welch

 UPDATE: Thursday, Dec. 16:
The Letters to Bernie Campaign is growing!
Congressman Peter Welch wants to hear from 99ers.
It's not too late - 99ers are still suffering and the Congressman wants your stories ASAP. Please send your story to: DearPeterWelch@gmail.com.
Alexandra will print each one out and take it to the Congressman's office.  Use the power of 99er numbers to send your stories all to one place, printed out and piled together.  Send your story NOW to DearPeterWelch@gmail.com.
Watch the CNN coverage of this story here.
 Thank you.

Updated: Sunday, Dec. 12:
Please keep sending your letters in!
Each one will be printed out
and delivered to the Senator's office.
Help Senator Sanders Help 99ers.
Send your 99er story NOW
Watch the CNN story here..

Please, DO IT NOW.

Senator Bernie Sanders (Indp.VT), is one of the few who have consistently stood up for 99ers, the unemployed and regular Americans against the corporations, big banks and stone-walling politicians.  Help Senator Sanders Help 99ers.  Send in your 99er story and why we need a Tier V or more weeks included in the UI legislation currently being negotiated on Capital Hill.  Even if you are not a 99er, but know and care for someone who is, we want to hear from you.  Many Senators and Representatives are very angry that a deal has been made to extend tax cuts for the rich, while current and future 99ers are being thrown under the bus.  Give them the back up they need to fight for us.  Email your story to: DearBernieSanders@gmail.com .

Many, many 99ers, unemployed still receiving UI and our supporters spent the last year, and longer, faxing and emailing letters to our elected representatives.  NOW is an opportunity to put all  our letters together as one STRONG statement that Senator Sanders and all the other Senators that support us can use to show that we are suffering and MUST be included.  If you have one of your letters still on your computer, you are only a few clicks away from doing your part.  Send it to DearBernieSanders@gmail.com.

99er Alexandra J. will print them out and take the letters to the Senator's office, with whom she is working.  CNN went to Vermont to cover Alex reading a few of the letters and taking the stack of printed letters to his office.  The Senator is, of course, in DC, but he is aware and very supportive of this campaign.  DO NOT DELAY!  We are off to a GREAT start, but we need many more personal stories  if our plight is to be heard. There IS HOPE.  Please do your part for yourself and all 99ers: DearBernieSanders@gmail.com.  Thank you.

From Rhonda T:

Many people are suffering in America this Holiday Season, especially the 99ers.  It is time for all of us to come together and help the 99ers and each other.  It is also time for 99ers to step out and help ourselves.  Beyond politics, anger or blame, many Americans need to know they are not forgotten.  99ers, the unemployed, underemployed, small and family businesses, those working paycheck to paycheck: the middle class is being forced into poverty by our own government.  Please join in this peaceful moment at your City Hall next Monday, December 20, from 6 - 7 pm (local time), for a candlelight vigil for the suffering, the forgotten, the middle class, and for HOPE.  Bring your candle.  The politicians don't respect us, so let's take a moment to respect each other.

Please join with us. RSVP  today and connect with 99ers and supporters in your area.  For other questions, please email:

Help With Your Job Search

Improve the Workforce Centers

As the New Year looms and the fate of the 99ers remains uncertain in Washington, the NY State Department of Labor (DOL), and NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS),  are reaching out to NYC area 99ers and the long term unemployed.  Coordinated directly through the office of Colleen Garner, the Commissioner of Labor for NY State, the DOL wants to hear from US about ways they can better assist 99ers, the long-term unemployed, skilled and professional workers in our job search.

Improvement of the Workforce Centers will be our main focus.  Many of us have used the centers; they are the direct avenue for delivery of services.    This is a rare opportunity to get the immediate help you may need and contribute, as a client, to changes the DOL may implement that focus more directly on our needs.  Issues such as realistic skills assessment, emerging industries, specifics of training opportunities and access to these programs will be discussed, in addition to new ideas.

Meet with high level NYS DOL  and SBS representatives; tell them your experiences, the good, the bad and the ugly!  Bring your concerns and suggestions. Your questions will be answered. Share your ideas for improvement, learn about new services/updated programs and help develop programs that focus on 99ers, skilled and professional workers.

Join Us Nov 30 @ Rockefeller Center

Keep the Lights On for the Unemployed
Demonstration at the Rockefeller Tree Lighting
5:00 pm November 30th at 5th Avenue below 50th St
Trains: B,D,F to Rockefeller Center, E to 5th Ave, Grand Central Station
Join us in Upholding the True Spirit of the Holidays!
This holiday season is going to be a wretched one for millions of Americans who can’t find work. There are an estimated 17 million unemployed, about 8 million of whom are collecting Unemployment Insurance (UI), and 5 million “99ers” – workers without UI benefits because they have already collected all the weeks available in their state – 99 weeks is the most any state provides. Each UI check means a family who can keep the lights on this holiday season, and maybe enjoy a simple celebration. But come November 30th, the number of 99ers will begin to rise dramatically – if Congress does nothing, 2 million more households will see their benefits cut off by the end of the year.
This means 7 million workers – who lost their jobs through no fault of their own – will be left with no income or solid job prospects.
We live in a rich country - where billionaires clink champagne glasses to toast their profits – and yet millions of jobless workers do not know if they will be able to afford a Holiday meal. With this demonstration, we are not trying to dampen the joy of the Christmas Tree lighting for the families who still have a little cheer to share with their children. We hope to act as a reminder that the true spirit of the Holiday is to remember the least among us.

WE MUST EXTEND UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE TO INCLUDE THE 99ERS!

Interviews at the Breadline

This is sort of "backwards," posting the interviews before the main video, but I want to get these up for press to use quotes from.

This is "activist video," meaning: bad sound, jiggling camera, etc. so bear with me! :)

Ucubed Letter

A new letter dropped into my inbox from Ucubed. We share it here for informational purposes, not as an endorsement of the contents.

Passionate, Persuasive and Powerful

Dear UCubed Leaders and Jobs Activists:

Tensions are rising. On the UCubed Facebook page, the anger and desperation of America’s jobless is clearly evident.

Last week, nearly six hundred jobs activists commented on UCubed Facebook updates. Some comments were white hot. Some sought clarity. Some asked for help. And some “liked” it enough to let their friends know.

Unfortunately, one update turned into a circular firing squad. The unemployed and the 99ers began taking potshots at each other. It wasn’t pretty. In fact, it got downright ugly. And we had to delete the ad hominem attacks.

Congress' letter to the EEOC on discrimination against the Unemployed

Good news: a large number of Congressional signatures (57) on a letter to the EEOC on discrimination against the unemployed in hiring.

Bad news: They don't mention age discrimination at all!!! Also, discrimination against the disabled should probably be part of this discussion as well.

Flashmobs4jobs was part of the Witness for Living Wage demonstration (that's one of our members, Sam, on the right of the above picture)! Hundreds of New Yorkers, including nearly 100 clergy members from all across the city, delivered thousands of prayer postcards asking the City Council to pass the Fair Wages for New Yorkers Act, which would require all companies which receive tax breaks from the City to pay $10/hr plus benefits or $11.50/hr without benefits.

99er activist talks about getting arrested

I’m 68 years old, and have been a “good girl” all my life. But this past Friday I turned into an activist and had myself arrested for the cause. I joined a small group of 99ers and members of the long-term unemployed, who gathered in front of the building housing the Dept. of Labor’s unemployment office to tell Congress to “Get to work so that we can get to work.”

Stand with us Saturday, Nov 20

Stand with Us
Saturday, November 20th!

Thanksgiving 2010:
No Feast for the Unemployed.

Please join the 99ers, other members of the unemployed, their friends, family and supporters, in recreating a 1930's "breadline" on Saturday, November 20th. We need to bring home the fact that the unemployed have been jobless and without benefits for far too long – and are starving.

We will be lining up in front of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, at 33 Liberty Street, in Manhattan, beginning at 11:30am. Please wear black or dark clothes. Hats, flat caps, scarves and shawls are fine, but no white or bright colors. This is to be a somber event. We will recreate the image from the Great Depression – because we believe this is the Great Depression II, not the Great Recession! Congress and the country have ignored us for too long. On the Saturday before the Thanksgiving holiday we will be invisible no more!

The media will be in attendance. We need to have as many people in the line as we can get, so please reach out to your friends, family, neighbors, and members of your house of worship, to join you. We will be picking up stale loaves, as props, during the week before the event. However, if you can get loaves from stores and bakeries that discard them at closing, each night, please bring them.

Directions: 5, J, A, C, 2, 3 to Fulton Street/Broadway-Nassau.
Please check with the MTA for any service disruptions on the weekend.

Multiple Choice

The woman in the photo is:

A. Un-American
B. Lazy
C. On drugs
D. A potential thief
E. Unemployed

The correct answer is E.Unemployed. She has tried to find work for over two years but has not been hired because of her age and the fact that she's "over-qualified".

Contact Congress and tell them: GET BACK TO WORK!

Dear Concerned Citizen,

Congress has delayed acting on behalf of the unemployed for far too long. 3-5 Million people have been CUT OFF THEIR UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS EVEN THOUGH THEY CONTINUE TO LOOK FOR WORK.

Now, Congress PLANS ON TAKING A VACATION! They will not resume sessions until November 15, then they will meet for ONE WEEK- THEN GO BACK ON VACATION!

Remember- for the next week your Representatives and Senators will not be in Washington! Go to the website of the individual lawmaker to find contact information for their offices in your home state! If you want a pdf to fax, find our flyer here.

U.S. Voters have demanded that their law-makers be more accountable- now IT'S UP TO US
to hold them to their
PROMISES TO THE AMERICAN MIDDLE CLASS!

We CAN make a difference!

From the front lines...

Here's an email from a jobs activist (and fellow member of the American 99ers Union) who's doing an awesome action:

We have been working on the XBOX Live get out the vote.  XBOX live attracks many age groups.  However, it seems many unemployed, college age kids and adults go on this as a form of entertainment.  It crosses state lines and depending on your settings can cross country lines as well.  We have been using this as a way to communicate the 99er plight and have had great success with this movement.

By creating a Clan tag of VOTE-opens up conversations online with others about who they will vote for and why.

By having that conversation I do not have to tell them who to vote for just to tell them as a 99er what I have experienced and learned about the government and what the Republicans have done to obstruct things that would help the 98% of the country.

It educated people on who and what the 99ers are.  It give the opportunity to give them topics to google and make their own decision.  Not telling them who to vote for just telling them who I am voting for and it has changed many peoples minds.  It creates conversations for people who do not really watch the news or read news papers.

Suggestions......PLAYSTATION 3 would be a great place to do this activity.
I wouldnt suggest the WII as much since more young people underage voters tend to play on that system.

WILL YOU BECOME A 99er BEFORE CHRISTMAS?

Vote for Jobs * Vote for Tier V * Vote Democratic * Protect Yourself

Anyone collecting unemployment insurance will become a 99er after November 30th unless Congress votes for an extension. This will be a huge fight, just like last July. Currently, however, there is a stand alone bill, S.3706 that would create a Tier V, 20 additional weeks, for ALL who have exhausted their unemployment insurance (UI), both the “old” 99ers, and the “new” 99ers who will begin to lose UI after Nov. 30th. The bill is supported by the Democrats, not the Republicans. The Democratic Party has supported job creation, the unemployed and fought for extensions of Tiers and dates. This is the party that needs to remain the majority in Congress if any of us are to receive any help. We already know that the GOP is not a party for the people. At every turn, Republicans have chosen to support banks, the wealthy and corporations instead of supporting the needs of struggling Americans. Current 99ers cannot wait any longer for financial assistance. We have fought long and hard for over 8 months now, and we need the support of ALL future 99ers to join the fight. Whether or not you are receiving UI, all unemployed, underemployed, those who fear they may be laid-off soon, and their families, must not simply wait and hope for job creation and extended UI. Millions of unemployed will be 99ers after November 30. If Republicans take control of the House of Representatives and/or the Senate, many can expect to remain a 99er for a very long time.

If you are not a 99er, how will the upcoming expiration date of November 30th affect your UI? The bottom line is this:

  1. 1. If you are currently collecting your first 26 weeks, after Nov. 30th, you WILL NOT be allowed to move into a Tier. All you will receive in TOTAL UI is 26 weeks. When you finish your 26 weeks, you will become a 99er.
    • Example: You first filed for UI in August, 2010. Your 26 weeks is finished in January. You will become a 99er in January, 2011.
  2. If your state/state you are collecting from qualifies for the Tier, and you begin a new Tier before November 30th, you will be able to complete the weeks for that Tier. You WILL NOT be allowed to move the next Tier and, when your current Tier ends, you will become a 99er.
    • Example: Assuming your state/state you are collecting from qualifies, you began Tier 1, 20 weeks, in August, 2010. You will become a 99er in January, 2011.
  3. If you began collecting your 20 weeks of Extended Benefits (EB), before the Nov. 28th deadline, you WILL NOT collect EB after December 5th. No EB will be paid out, regardless of how many weeks you have left. On Dec, 5th, you will become a 99er.
    • Example: You began collecting EB in August, 2010 and you think you have until Jan, 2011. You will be cut-off and become a 99er on Dec.5, 2010.

Usually, a laid-off person receives 26 weeks of unemployment insurance (UI). In a normal economy, 26 weeks is often enough time to find a job. Money for the first 26 weeks comes from your State. Because of the economic crisis, some states also have Extended Benefits (EB), and the Federal government pays for extra weeks through a series of steps, called Tiers.

Currently, there are four Tiers of Federally funded benefits (in addition to the original 26 weeks of state benefits and 20 weeks of EB, which is jointly funded). With each new Tier, new individual and state eligibility rules and expiration dates are added. For example, new money for ALL Tiers expires on November 30th of this year. It is extremely important that you understand what Tier you are in and how the expiration dates and rules apply to you. The two most important things are: the original date you filed for UI, and the state you live in or are collecting from.

The original 26 weeks, plus the current Tiers and EB, add up to 99 weeks. The term “99er”, originally adopted by those who have exhausted all 99 weeks, now refers to anyone who has exhausted all of their unemployment benefits. This does not mean that everyone has, or will, receive 99 weeks of UI. Some think they will automatically move from Tier to Tier and collect all 99 weeks. NO!! The start date when you file your original claim determines which Tiers you are eligible for. In addition, not all states are entitled to 99 weeks; it depends on your states’ individual unemployment rate (or that of the state you are collecting from). Each state is different; please be sure to check with the State Department of Labor to determine which Tier you are in, which Tiers you are eligible for and how many weeks your state might be eligible for. DO NOT assume you know; check for yourself. You can find your state/collecting state office here: http://www.servicelocator.org/OWSLinks.asp

BE PRO-ACTIVE. DON’T WAIT UNTIL YOU LOSE YOUR UI AFTER NOV 30TH!!

All unemployed are 99ers.
We take the name ‘99ers’ as a show of solidarity because we are all in the same boat unless law-makers take action soon.

We ask all unemployed to vote as 99ers on November 2.
VOTE for job creation, VOTE for Tier 5, VOTE for extended UI, VOTE for Democrats!!

A message to all 99ers going to DC for 10.2.10

From (some of) our fearless leaders:
Greetings: Below is the 10/2 March info for those not coming from the NYC area.  I have done my best to confirm and recheck all the details, so this should be the final. Thanks for pushing this out there; various issues have delayed things, but hopefully we can still get it to most 99ers.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
Thanks, Kian

******************************************************

99ers UNITE!  We are going to have a great day, and we hope all 99ers and their supporters who are coming to the March on Saturday will make every effort to find the 99er group.  The NY/NJ Chapter of UWAG/flashmobs4jobs has been working for weeks to organize a great event and facilitate spreading the word about 99ers and S3706.  Below is detailed information we hope you will find useful.

URGENT PLEA: We have a few people going down the night before as the Advance Team.  We will need help at the park in the morning, however, beginning at 9 am.  If you are in DC on Friday, or live in DC, and can help us set up, please email uwagnyc@gmail.com or post on the flashmobs4jobs facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/FlashMobs4Jobs/140646149305185 .
We are all just volunteers, so please, help us if you can.  Thank you.

What should we do on 10.2.10??!!

Whether or not you can come to the rally, we'd want everyone in the 99er/unemployed community to have a chance to have input on the rally in DC!

What should those of us who are going to DC do? We want to: a) make a big, unified impact with our presence; and b) do something to represent everybody who is stuck at home with no money.

Post your thoughts in the comment section!

Unemployed Workers Action Group (UWAG) initiate a seriously entertaining flash mob near Wall Street

From the NY Public Policy Examiner:
Yesterday, the Unemployed Workers Action Group (UWAG) successfully initiated a flash mob behind the famous bull of Wall Street near Bowling Green Park.

Many thanks to Edward Nelson for writing this excellent article. He wraps it up with a stirring warning:
As Congress comes back into session this week, many will be facing election this November 2, 2010. Confronted with mounting pressure from 99ers and their supporters across the nation, it would not be wise to count the 99ers out.
and a reminder of just what is at stake:
Those who have benefited from the H.R. 4213 unemployment extension will have exhausted their benefits in November of 2010. In which, they will be the new 99ers relying upon groups like UWAG to assist them in obtaining an extension of unemployment benefits for people that have reached ninety-nine weeks. United States Senator Debbie Stabenow’s bill, “Americans Want to Work Act” (S. 3706) will be the primary focus of the unemployed and those who support them.
